The Problem with Monopolies

For those of us who have cable in the US I can almost guarantee that you have Time Warner or as it is now called, Spectrum cable. I also can almost guarantee that you are struggling to pay that hefty bill each and every month. At least if you're in the class bracket that I am or lower. I'm about at the lower middle class just for reference. Now I'm not complaining. My family has enough to survive and while cable and internet isn't essential for our bodily and health needs, it is a necessity in this day and age. Especially when it comes to internet.

Back to the issue at hand. Now, if you have Spectrum cable you may have been excited when you heard about the buy out. "New changes are coming!", you may have thought. "They might lower prices!", you hoped. Not so much. Instead they're cutting channels. Up to about 14 channels and the programming along with it. Which is not at all what customers were hoping for. And for a company that likes to advertise their business class on TV, that's not a good business strategy. Don't you agree?

See, the real issue here is that they have no competition so they feel that they can do whatever they want and they can't lose. They've pretty much eliminated all the competition by buying them out and boxing them out so that they fail and disappear. That's a real issue.

With no competition a company either stagnates and slowly eats themselves alive with their bad decisions or they do whatever they want because, "Well where else are you going to go?" That kind of thing is bad for customers like you and me. Because all in all, we're the one's who really pay the price. Our prices are through the roof and we end up with our programming choices cut in half. But for the same price. Yeah you can switch to an alternative like dish or internet TV but no one really wants to do that. We're forced to do it. We can't keep up with these high bills and especially not if you're taking things away.

Look, I'm no fan of the Kardashians, the less of them the better, but that doesn't mean I want the E! network to disappear. I'm a fan of wrestling so the USA network is essential for me. The same goes with Oxygen as I'm a devoted viewer of BGC (Bad Girls Club) and I'm sure the rest of customers don't want MSNBC or Bravo to go either.

Now if I have to switch to an alternative than so be it, but I'd rather not. But when push comes to shove and you're basically being slapped in the face what choice do you have?

The reason why this is titled the way it is, is because if Spectrum had a competitor this wouldn't be happening. They would be trying to sweeten the pot to keep customers happy so they don't switch cable companies on them. There are supposed to be laws against situations like this but there aren't. Because unfortunately we live in a Capitalist country where complete and total domination is encouraged. Make as much money as you can by any means necessary. But don't think about the faces you have to step on on your way to the top. Not even the people who got you there.

Remember, power corrupts, total power absolutely corrupts.

If you're a Spectrum customer and you want to voice your displeasure with these channels being dropped go to this website and let them know that we're not okay with this. Drop the prices, not the channels.
