Easy To Not Be Into Politics When It Hardly Affects You, Right?

Long title, for a heated rant. I was watching a Youtuber that I really enjoy and she said that she's not into politics and that she doesn't take part in the process because to her the whole thing is "stupid". Now while I can usually watch someone and enjoy their content while not agreeing with them on some things this sent me into questioning if I could watch her but also question if I might not like her at all. Now you might think that's a bit much and I'm overreacting. Well, think of it this way. Due to the fact that I'm a young woman of color living in a lower middle class area (but honestly it's bordering on poor at this point) and I live everyday in a political space because of those things, I can't turn a blind eye to politics. I can't not take part in it. Everyday is a political battle for me. As I try to make a place in the world, when I'm out and I need to make it home safely, if I show my face in a mostly white area knowing th...

The Problem With Saying "I'm Colorblind"

If you're a POC (Person of Color), you've most likely heard this phrase before: "I'm colorblind, I don't even see color!" And no, I'm not talking about someone whose eyes don't take in color the way others do. I'm talking about the white people who respond to the issue of racism by saying that when they look at someone they don't see the color of their skin. According to them they don't even notice it, it doesn't matter to them. Well, allow me to let you in on a little secret. People of color don't want you to disregard or ignore our race or nationality. We want it to be acknowledged and recognized because it's a source of pride. We're proud of who we are. We just want you to understand and be okay with that. To say that you're colorblind is to ignore our struggles and triumphs as a person of color. If we wanted the world to be colorblind there wouldn't be a Black History Month or a Hispanic Heritage Month. There...

It's not just clothes. It's not just hair. It's not just music and words.

Okay, I have a new blog to just vent into. What's the first thing I'm gonna do? Oh yeah, dump a rant on it just so we know where we're going. Don't worry, don't fret. This isn't going to be the only thing on this blog. I'm just feeling something that I want to get off my chest. Let me start by saying this: I'm a young black woman. I see things and I know things and I've experienced things that have shaped me into the woman I am today. Any black woman will tell you the same. I've had my natural hair texture insulted, I've been subject to colorism, and I've dealt with racism in multiple forms. So I react to certain things because I can see where it comes from and it affects me. It's a vicseral feeling. I feel it in my soul. Just like I feel it in my soul when a non black person uses our slang or jocks our style and calls it their own. Gets plastic surgery to get big lips and somehow gets credit for starting the "Full lip trend...
